"Get Britain Building" Agrees Steve

(September 27, 2010)
During the Labour Party Conference in Manchester, Steve was keen to make time to meet with the Builders Merchants’ Federation to discuss the construction industry. The meeting was instructive and constructive on both sides.  Steve outlined Labour’s plans for jobs and growth and BMF representatives explained the Federation’s “Get Britain Building” campaign, which argues that construction is the only industry capable of creating the 2½ million real, meaningful jobs and the sustained growth required to kick start a private enterprise-led recovery.

With years of experience in the industry – and as a UCATT-sponsored Member of Parliament – Steve shares the Federation’s view that construction has a crucial role to play not only in reigniting the economy and regenerating urban areas, but also in addressing the severe affordable housing shortage which currently blights the country and is worsen under the Government’s plans to limit housing benefit entitlement.

He also agrees with the Federation that local and regional economies depend upon local and regional enterprise.  Building, plumbing and allied trade SMEs must therefore receive the encouragement, incentives and practical support they need to flourish.
