Labour MP for Liverpool Walton Steve Rotheram has been successful in his attempts to get a Parliamentary Committee to look into the issue of racism in sport.

The DCMS Select Committee have agreed to look into the matter following a number of high profile cases regarding alleged racism in football, relating to cases against Liverpool FC’s Luis Suarez and Chelsea FC’s John Terry.

The Committee will decide on the terms of reference next week, and have scheduled an evidence session for Tuesday 6th March 2012.

Steve explained,“I continue to support the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ initiative and believe, given the nature of recent events, that it would be appropriate for this issue to be looked at by Parliamentarians from all Parties and from different football/sporting and non-sporting allegiances. Sport should be rightly proud that in many ways it has led the field in tackling social issues such as; racism, homophobia and sectarianism and it will be interesting to see what conclusions the Select Committee draw from the evidence session.”
