Walton MP goes the extra Mile for Sport Relief

(March 29, 2012)

On Wednesday 14th March Steve Rotheram MP swapped his tailoring for a T-shirt, Everton shorts and Andy Burnham’s trainers, to complete the Westminster Mile for Sport Relief.

Steve joined over 40 MPs and Peers as they stepped out of Parliament and into St. James’s Park in London to complete a Mile and encourage the public to take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 25th March.

Members from both Houses met after Prime Minister’s Questions and were joined by one of the UK's most successful Paralympians and crossbench peer in the House of Lords, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, as well as choreographer, director and TV presenter Arlene Phillips.

Steve said, “I felt a bit like being back at school and having forgot my PE kit. I was racing around Parliament before PMQs, desperately trying to find a pair of shorts and trainers. Thankfully Andy Burnham gave me his kit but it meant wearing Everton shorts! The things you do for charity!

“Sport relief is a fantastic event in the British calendar and it gives everyone the chance to get involved, get active and raise some money. Liverpool has a proud tradition for coming together and helping others and this year, that spirit was on show again in the most fantastic way. John Bishop’s achievements this year were phenomenal. Everyone in our great City is proud of him.”

Tanni Grey-Thompson said: “Events like these are really special. It’s great to see colleagues from both houses coming together and doing something for Sport Relief. It just goes to show that everyone can join in the fun and take part in the Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 25th March. It’s a great day out and by getting sponsored, you’re raising money for a fantastic cause.”

Politicians took part with the aim of encouraging the nation to take part in one of the hundreds of Sport Relief Mile events taking place across the UK on Sunday 25th March. Enter the Mile at www.sportrelief.com.

More than one men, women and children are expected to participate in the Sport Relief Mile by the end of the Sport Relief Weekend, Friday 23rd to Sunday 25th March.  The money raised will support people living unimaginably tough lives, both on our doorstep in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.
