Liverpool Walton MP Steve Rotheram reacts to the news that the IPCC has launched an investigation into the conduct of the South Yorkshire Police during and after the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

"I welcome today's announcement and hope that it signals the first step on what will be a difficult but rewarding road to justice.

"The Hillsborough independent Panel's report reaffirmed what many on Merseyside already knew; that the fans were the real heroes on the day whilst the police simply froze and began an orchestrated cover up.

"Of course, it is not the first time that the South Yorkshire Police's conduct has been investigated but my hope is that this time, with the undeniable truth and the facts that come with it, at the disposal of the IPCC, the police officers who were involved in this cover up will be brought to justice.

"The people of Liverpool are putting their trust in the IPCC to deliver for the families, the police service and the whole of the UK and I am confident they will fulfil their task".
