Liverpool Walton MP Steve Rotheram has responded to the news that the Tory-led Government are set to sack almost 14,000 prison staff in the space of just five years.

Figures released to Steve from the Ministry of Justice, reveal that between 2010 and 2015, David Cameron if set to sack 30% of the prison work force, leaving just 30,500 full time members of public sector prison staff active.

Steve explained, “These figures are truly shocking. Over the course of this parliament 13,780 members of prison staff will be sacked by the Tory-led Government. This comes at a time when prison populations are growing and we are told by David Cameron and Chris Grayling that there is a revolution in rehabilitation.

“Yet the Government’s rhetoric doesn’t mirror the reality. How can we ask our prison officer staff to invest time and energy into rehabilitating prisoners when we are sacking 30% of the workforce and asking the remaining staff to do more with less?

“These figures are dangerous too. With so many prison officers sacked and such a large proportion of experience removed from our prisons, there are inherent dangers that we might not be able to keep our prisons safe and under control.

“We ask prison staff to undertake an enormously important job, in sometimes dangerous and always difficult circumstances. Given the severity of what has been disclosed to me, I will be submitting an application for a debate in parliament so that MPs have the chance to scrutinise the decision of the Ministry of Justice and urge them to very quickly, think again”.
