Steve Slams Government as Liverpool's Housing Benefit Bill Rises

Private Sector Housing Benefits

Walton MP Steve Rotheram has slammed the Government after official statistics released by the charity Shelter have proven that the number of housing benefit claimants has increased since David Cameron became Prime Minister.

Steve explained, “The Government have made great play on the fact that they want to reduce the benefit bill and make housing a priority, so much so that together with the Liberal Democrats, they have set about introducing the pernicious bedroom tax.

“Unfortunately, these statistics are evidence of what I have been warning George Osborne about since 2010; things are getting worse, not better.

“In the private rented sector, we now know that there are more than 2,000 additional housing benefit claimants and this figure is set to rise even further when the true impact of the bedroom tax is calculated.

“The real tragedy here is that hardworking families’ taxes are simply going to line the pockets of private landlords rather than being pumped back into the social housing sector and allowing councils to reinvest that money in their housing stock.

“If anyone was in any doubt that Cameron’s economic plan isn’t working and never will, than these stats will end all doubt”.
