Tyre Ageing in Brussels(November 21, 2014)
Walton MP Steve Rotheram has visited the European Parliament in Brussels this week to meet with North West MEP Theresa Griffin and fellow European colleagues, to discuss the age of tyres on buses and coaches.
Steve explained, "Travelling to the European Parliament was the next step in the campaign because much of our transport legislation is made in Europe. Frances Molloy has been fantastic at raising awareness of the dangers that old tyres on buses and coaches can cause to passengers. Earlier this month she addressed a delegation from the British bus and coach companies as well as the UK tyre manufacturers and distributors in parliament, where she won widespread support for the campaign.
"I was pleased to carry on that work this week with the support of local MEP Theresa Griffin. Euro MEPs were very receptive and we made a strong case to the EU Commission on why it was necessary to look more closely at the age of a tyre, rather than simply focusing on condition.
"It was interesting to see that many members of the EP Transport Committee were very supportive of an additional advisory being put into annual MOTs that stipulates the age of a tyre. Such an advisory would be mandatory. This is part of what my private members bill seeks to do.
"The campaign goes on".
