Walton MP Steve Rotheram has slammed the government over news from the Office of National Statistics that the total number of people employed on zero-hours contracts has risen to 1.8million.

The Tory-led government has previously boasted of an additional 2million jobs created since May 2010 with the Labour Party arguing that the overwhelming majority of these jobs were low pay and insecure contracts – something the government had refuted. Until now.

“This is unequivocal proof that the Tory government’s attempts to kid the pubic into thinking they had presided over the creation of 2 million jobs is a total whitewash.

“We know that in Liverpool, people have been forced to take insecure zero-hours contracts that means they are off the welfare state but still unable to work enough hours to provide for themselves and their families. In the end, these people have been trapped and forced to use the city’s many foodbanks, just to survive week-by-week.

“The ONS also tell us that in the majority of cases, a person employed on a zero-hours contract is also only employed for less than 12 months. This is not giving people a career or a chance to build a sustainable income for their families. It is exacerbating the cost of living crisis that has gripped Liverpool.

“We will end their abuse when Labour are returned to government in 70 days’ time. So if people want decent jobs with decent wages and job security, only a vote for Labour will guarantee that”.
