Liverpool MPs, Steve Rotheram and Luciana Berger spend the week living below the poverty line

(June 23, 2011)

Liverpool Walton MP Steve Rotheram teamed up with Liverpool Wavertree MP Luciana Berger, to raise money for global poverty charities. The Labour MP's spent the week surviving on just £1 each day for food which is the UK equivalent of living on the international extreme poverty line.

The pair had no shortage of company. In addition to the thousands taking part in the challenge, over a billion people struggle to meet their daily needs on less than £1 a day.

Living Below the Line

Speaking after the event, Steve explained, “The scary thing for me was when I found out that living in extreme poverty meant having less than £1 to spend in the UK. Sometimes we think to ourselves 'but £1 would go so much further overseas' - but that's not the case. I couldn't imagine having to cover all my food, accommodation, health and education for £1 or less.”

Luciana also said, “It’s less than half the cost of a bus ticket. It’s much harder than I was expecting. But 1.4 billion people do this every day and have to pay for much more than just food – so I’m sure I’ll get through it”.
