Steve Urges PM to Stop Hiding Behind Leveson

(May 10, 2012)

Steve In Chamber

The Chairman of Labour's backbench Culture, Media and Sport committee, Steve Rotheram MP, has responded to Lord Justice Leveson's warning that he will not judge on whether or not Jeremy Hunt breached the Ministerial code.

Steve explained, "Lord Justice Leveson has made it clear today that he will not reach a verdict on whether Jeremy Hunt breached the Ministerial Code.

"It was never the role of the Inquiry to do this and the Prime Minister and Jeremy Hunt should stop trying to hide behind it. The more that they do, the more suspcious everybody becomes that the PM has something he wants to hide from the British public.

"As a Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt is accountable to the House of Commons and I know that Harriet Harman has now written to the Speaker to express Labour's concern that Hunt is evading his responsibility to Parliament.

"Labour have also written to Jeremy Hunt on three occasions asking him to disclose important information which he steadfastly refuses to do.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that Jeremy Hunt has breached the Ministerial Code, misled Parliament and failed to act in an impartial manner during the BSkyB bid – it is ludicrous that the Prime Minister has refused to refer him to the Independent Adviser on Ministers’ Interests.

"It is also shameful that in just a few weeks time, the world will visit London for the Olympic Games, and they will now do so with a cloud of sleaze hanging over the Olympic Minister's head.

"The Prime Minister and Jeremy Hunt are using every trick in the book to avoid any kind of investigation. They clearly have something to hide and Jeremy Hunt must resign."
